A Bit of Grace
Grace comes with multiple definitions, not to mention multiple benefits. If you take a moment to consult the dictionary, you will find meanings that include the way in which someone carries themselves, a blessing offered prior to a meal, honoring someone with one’s presence (a verb), and “the free and unmerited favor of God.” I like them all although I find it a tad pretentious if not egotistical to think I am capable of honoring anyone merely by my presence. Conversely, who does not appreciate a visit from a friend or member of the family? Sandy and I are certainly delighted whenever one of our grandchildren graces us with their presence. We don’t even mind when they bring their parents along though the parents always take a back seat when grandchildren are in tow.
Still, of all the definitions there are for grace, the one most appealing in my book is the one that reads “the free and unmerited favor of God.” I know this space is usually devoted to secular reflections on leadership, but granting someone a bit of grace strikes me as being as good a leadership quality as there is. I know I would welcome some grace in those times when I fail to measure up, and not just the grace of God. What about you?
In case I am not making myself clear, I need and fervently hope my fellow travelers will grant me a little grace on those occasions when I fall short of their expectations. Likewise, I must be willing to grant myself and others some grace whenever they struggle. Furthermore, when it comes to extending grace to others, I must do so without expectation of favor or limit. That is, after all, the principle that underlies the very meaning of grace.
Thus, the next time you find yourself becoming frustrated with someone because they have missed the mark, grant them some grace. They will be better for it and they may also choose to pass it on.
Soli Deo Gloria
